Levels of editing
Editorial professionals distinguish between various levels of editing, depending on the type of intervention required. I offer all the following:
- Proofreading: provides the final quality check before publication. Usually the document will already be formatted. I will be looking for consistency and accuracy, including any issues with spelling, grammar, punctuation and layout.
- Proof-editing: sits between proofreading and copy-editing. The text will be nearly ready to publish but will benefit from some improvements to the drafting and layout.
- Copy-editing: when copy-editing, I will normally be working on text that is in draft format. My role will be broader and will include ensuring that the text is easy to follow, suitable for the intended reader and free of error and omission. If necessary, I will adapt the document to reflect the way in which it is being published: a different approach is needed for content that will be read online.
- Developmental editing: the most in-depth level of editing. Here, the text is likely to be at an early draft stage. I will look at the document as a whole and provide input on the overall structure and content.
I also have copywriting experience.
I will follow your house style guide. If you don’t already have a style guide, I will be happy to work with you to compile one.
